In a living room in East-Berlin in 1973 a couple of gay men decided to take action together aroused by Rosa von Praunheims movie “It Is Not the Homosexual Who Is Perverse, But the Society In Which He Lives”. Later on also women, transexuals and transvestites were to join the movement under the name of HIB (Homsexual Interest Group Berlin) to organize events, discussion groups and parties in the cellars of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf built for this special purpose.
The Name “Sonntags-Club” was formed in the 80s, because it was only possible to get a meeting space under a cover name in order to cover up the purpose and identity of the visitors*
Sonntags-Club has been a registered association since 1990. Since 1999 it has been located in a former library in Greifenhagener Straße, which was rebuilt with a lot of love and engagement.
Sonntags-Club continues to be one of the most charming associations for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and trans* in Berlin, which offers its visitors* a widely diversified cultural programme as well as different groups and counselling services.
