Manfred Salzgeber founded the company in 1985 to bring “Buddies”, the first movie which openly talked about HIV/AIDS, into cinemas.
Ever since the Kreuzberg-based rental company, which today goes by the name Salzgeber & Co. Medien GmbH, has brought hundreds of movies into cinemas, which they co-produced and released on DVD/Bluray and VOD.
In addition to documentaries the traditional main focus is still movies from queer cinema. The directors Derek Jarman, Monika Treut, Gus Van Sant, João Pedro Rodrigues, Sébastien Lifshitz, Jan Krüger and Ira Sachs stand for an innovative exchange between queer and world cinema.
The rental company organizes a monthly movie night “queerfilmnacht”, which aims to bring queer movies into cinemas of medium-sized German cities. In addition, Edition Salzgeber publishes the online magazine sissymag, the leading German medium on queer movies.
Edition Salzgeber already received the German Distribution Award 3 times for their broad commitment, which includes their close collaboration with local initiatives and their presence at events such as the Lesbian and Gay Festival.
